Straddling Tuscany and Umbria, this tour takes you to discover three hilltop gems: Cortona, Assisi and Deruta. Cortona, also known for its Summer international festival of photography, is a lovely town to stop by for a stroll on our way to Assisi, do some shopping in the many antiques shops, to seat in piazza for a coffee or a spritz. Once in Assisi, you’ll see how striking the architecture and its chromatic palette of pink and white stone, are. We suggest you to take your time to visit a real masterpiece, the Basilica of Saint Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The basilica – with the numerous frescoes by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti among the many others masters, is also a place of pilgrimage: in its crypt the remains of Saint Francis are still interred. After lunch you might continue your stroll in Assisi or detour to Deruta, one of the centers of Italy’s historic ceramics tradition. Here you you can visit Ubaldo Grazia, the world’s most ancient majolica factory and buy some hand made extraordinary ceramics.
